Join Dr. Smita Dewan as she dives deep into how immigration policies create stressors for individuals and families and have a direct impact on their mental well-being, with resulting negative mental health outcomes, including trauma, isolation and acculturation stress. This 2.25 hour long beginning to intermediate level online self-study, recorded webinar, created in November, 2021 for social work and other clinical professionals, discusses the impact of immigration policies on the mental well-being of immigrants.

Participants will be able to:

  1. list 2 reasons why it is important to understand how immigration policy affects immigrant mental health
  2. describe 2 stressors for immigrants during the immigration process; identify two immigration policies which no longer have protections for keeping families together
  3. list two post-migration stressors for immigrants
  4. list two mental health symptoms of stress experienced by parents and children separated at the southern border

This course work/training has been approved to satisfy CASAC renewal requirements and CPP/CPS initial/renewal credentialing requirements. 

For NYS Clinicians

Recognized CE provider for NYS Social Workers (# SW-0747) and LMHCs (#MHC-0272), LMFTs (#MFT-0115) and has provider level approval to offer CEs for these recorded webinars to NYS SWers and LMHCs. Registrants should note that only 1/3 of contact hours needed  for NY LCSWs and LMSWs can come from non-interactive web coursework. Please double check with NYSED, as restrictions may have changed during COVID.

In 2024, Connections Counseling is not offering credit for counselors in states other than New York State. We do not have ASWB approval to give CEs for this course to counselors in other states.  

About the author

Smita Dewan, LMSW, Ph.D. LL.B

Dr. Dewan is currently an Assistant Professor at the New York City College of Technology/CUNY. She has her doctorate in Social Work from Fordham University, and a law degree from the National Law School of India University. 

Her research interests include social work with immigrants and refugees, international social work, human rights and social justice, and program evaluation.  Her most recent publication in the field of immigration is entitled “Can government funding strengthen the third sector? The impact of a capacity building program on Hispanic/Latino faith-based and community-based organizations.”

Completion requirements
