Join Tim Campbell, Ph.D., bioethicist, for a deep dive into ethics and clinical practice. Using a case centered approach, Dr. Campbell introduces the idea of DALYs to help determine “right” action in ethical dilemmas. He discusses the intricacies of ethical decision-making in the areas of confidentiality, technological advances, immigration and addictions. Ethics for the Counseling Professions Seminar is a self-paced beginning to intermediate level self-study webinar, created in 2021-2022 for the continuing education needs of social workers and other clinicians. **See Approved Credits on this page for state and license restrictions.
Course Agenda (timed): self-paced, expected to complete in 4.5 hours
1. (1.0 hour) General ethics principles and review of the Counselor codes of conduct of various organizations which underpin the counseling practice of various groups (NAADAC, NASW, ACA)
2. (1.0 hour) Case analysis using Harms/ Benefits analysis and DALYs.
2. (2.5 hour) Discussion of addiction issues, the ethical points of confidentiality, especially in addictions cases, discussion of a case which highlights issues of confidentiality, couples’ dynamics, and mandated reporter issues, with the use of DALYs to perform a Harms/Benefit analysis in a case involving addiction.
Participants will be able to:
- list the three basic ethical principles which underpin the ethical codes of the social work, mental health, and/or CASAC counseling professions
- describe one way in which DALYs (Disability Adjusted Life Years) can be used in a Harms/Benefit analysis
- perform the first level of a Harms and Benefits analysis for one of the following value-conflicted situations: client confidentiality, technology use by counselors, substance use disorders
- list two general ethics guidelines, specific to technology use in the counseling profession, that can safeguard my own use of advanced technology
- list one ethics guideline in their own professional ethics code which pertains to the conflicted situations which immigrants to this country may face
- list three ways in which substance use disorders affect individuals and/or society in the US
- identify one ethics guideline, specific to conflicts which face counselors of clients with Substance Use Disorders, that can safeguard client recovery efforts
- describe one treatment option for families in which there is active substance use

Registrants should note that only 1/3 of contact hours needed for NY LCSWs and LMSWs can come from non-interactive web coursework.

In 2024, Connections Counseling is not offering credit for counselors in states other than New York State. We do not have ASWB approval to give CEs for this course to counselors in other states.

Timothy Campbell, Ph.D.
Tim Campbell, Ph.D. is a research fellow at the Institute for Futures Studies, Stockholm, which conducts advanced research within the social sciences. The Institute for Futures Studies promotes a future-oriented research perspective, and contributes to the public debate through its seminars and publication activities. Dr. Campbell has a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Rutgers University.
He is a member of the Continuing Education Advisory Committee of Connections Counseling PLLC, the organization which developed this research project. His interest in this particular project in the ethics field stems from his interest in ethical dilemmas concerning quality of life. Read his bio here.
