Join bioethicist Dr. Tim Campbell for a deep dive into ethics decision-making in the areas of technology, immigration, and addictions. The course will familiarize clinicians who practice counseling with values underpinning ethical codes and with ethical decision-making skills. Filmed commentaries on case scenarios are done by bioethics researcher Dr. Tim Campbell, who walks us through cases which require ethical decision-making in all areas.

Created in 2019, the 2022  Ethics for the Counseling Professions webinar is a two and a quarter hour long beginning to intermediate level online, self-study audio/video course which features a case-centered approach and instruction in ethical decision-making using Harms/Benefit analysis.

Course Agenda (timed): self-paced, expected to complete in 2.25 hours.
1. (1.0 hour)
 General ethics principles and review of the Counselor codes of conduct of various organizations which underpin the counseling practice of various groups (NAADAC, NASW, ACA)
2. (1.25 hours) 
Discussion of various ethics dilemmas in areas of 1) client confidentiality, 2) technological advances in the counseling professions, 3) immigration, 4) addiction, with the use of a Harms and Benefits analysis. 

Participants will be able to:

  1. list the three basic ethical principles which underpin the ethical codes of the social work, mental health, and/or CASAC counseling professions
  2. identify 3 general guidelines from their ethical code for their specific licensure
  3. perform the first level of a Harms and Benefits analysis for one of the following value-conflicted situations: client confidentiality, technology use by counselors, US immigration, substance use disorders
  4. list two general ethics guidelines, specific to technology use in the counseling profession, that can safeguard their own use of advanced technology
  5. list one ethics guideline in their own professional ethics code which pertains to the conflicted situations which immigrants to this country may face
  6. list three ways in which substance use disorders affect individuals and/or society in the US
  7. identify one ethics guideline,  specific to conflicts which face counselors of clients with Substance Use Disorders, that can safeguard client recovery efforts

For NYS Clinicians

Recognized CE provider for NYS Social Workers (# SW-0747), LMHCs (#MHC-0272), and LMFTs (#MFT-0115) and has provider level approval to offer CEs for these recorded webinars to NYS SWers and LMHCs. Registrants should note that only 1/3 of contact hours needed  for NY LCSWs and LMSWs can come from non-interactive web coursework. Please double check with NYSED; restrictions may have changed during COVID.

Course Author

Tim Campbell, Ph.D. is a research fellow at the Institute for Futures Studies, (IFS) Stockholm, which conducts advanced research within the social sciences. The IFS contributes to the public debate through its seminars and publication activities. Dr. Campbell has a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Rutgers University.

Dr. Campbell’s interest in this particular project in the ethics field stems from his interest in ethical dilemmas concerning quality of life. Read his bio here.

Ruth is currently in private practice in New York City and in upstate NY. She is the Continuing Education Director of Connections Counseling PLLC which has a research and training mission.

She has 40 years’ experience working in mental health settings as a clinician, teacher, and author, and over 20 years’ experience in direct practice with Substance Use Disorders. She is a thoughtful and thought-provoking writer. Read her bio here.
