Immigration Mental Health Evaluation Primer
1.25 CEs | $10 | George Ramos, LMHC, Ph.D. [ENGLISH]
Join Dr. George Ramos as he discusses information about the “how to” of performing a mental health evaluation on a person who is an immigrant and needs a mental health evaluation to get treatment or to improve or verify his/her immigration status. This 1.25 hour long beginning to intermediate level recorded webinar, created in February, 2019, is a primer for social work and mental health professionals who are conducting and writing immigration hardship evaluations.
Participants will be able to:
- identify two reasons why a mental health clinician might be asked to perform an Immigration Mental Health Evaluation
- list two barriers that hinder an immigrant from getting mental health treatment
- list 2 ways in which the status “undocumented” may come to be applied to an immigrant
- list two types of visas that may preclude the removal of an undocumented immigrant from the US
- describe 2 circumstances under which a Hardship Application may be filed that would preclude an undocumented immigrant’s removal from the US
- list 3 assessments which may be important in constructing an immigrant’s mental health evaluation

About the author
George Ramos, LMHC, Ph.D.
Dr. George Ramos, LMHC, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of Mental Health Counseling at Nyack College in New York City. He is thrilled to be the father of a wonderful daughter, Arya Camilla. From 2006 until 2019, he was a Child Protective Specialist for NYC Administration for Children’s Services, NY. This was a full-time position in which he performed investigations of reports of child abuse/neglect and ensured child safety and welfare.
He says of his current interests,
“In my practice, I now am very interested to find how those with immigration issues can be served better by our mental health system. I’m doing a research project on barriers to service experienced by Latinos, and this webinar on mental health evaluations for immigrants is another way to examine and diminish barriers that immigrants experience to getting services.”
